Dr. Brian D. Barash graduated with Honors from the University of Kansas with his undergraduate degree in Human Biology.  After spending a year doing bench top research on Polycystic Kidney Disease, Dr. Barash confirmed that Medicine was his calling.

He went on to complete medical school in 1995, also at the University of Kansas Medical School and graduated in the top 10% of his class.  He was honored with the Cogwell award for his performance in course work in Anatomy and Cell Biology.

Dr. Barash was accepted based on medical school merit and performance early into the University of Kansas Psychiatry Residency program, securing a Fellowship position in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry prior to entering his Adult training.  

Dr. Barash completed his Adult training in 1998, the culmination of which was his serving as Chief Resident at the Kansas City VA Medical Center.  He then went on to finish his Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship in 2000.  While a fellow, he received the highest score among his class in the Psychiatry Resident in Training Examination for each year of fellowship.  Dr. Barash is a Board Certified Diplomate both in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. In 2008, Dr. Barash achieved his third Board Certification and Diplomate status in Addiction Medicine by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). 

Dr. Barash and colleagues started Comprehensive Psychiatric Associates in 1998 during a time when they were told the community was closed to accepting new physician groups.  Since that time, their practice has grown to be a stable fixture within the psychiatric community.  Dr. Barash and colleagues continue to provide inpatient and outpatient care to patients of all ages and levels of complexity and maintain a cutting edge philosophy, constantly staying abreast of new and emerging neuroscience information. Dr. Barash and colleagues work with mental health professionals including Therapists and Psychologists throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Dr. Barash has served as the Medical Director and attending Staff Psychiatrist to Marillac Children’s Psychiatric Hospital and Residential Treatment Center in Overland Park, Kansas since 2000.  He also is Medical Director of the Dual Diagnosis and Addiction Recovery services programming at Two Rivers Psychiatric Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.  Dr. Barash is on the volunteer faculty of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as a Clinical Assistant Professor.

Dr. Barash is honored to have served the National Alliance on Mental Illness for the past several years in their ambitious Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) Program as an Instructor on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to State of Kansas Law Enforcement community.  He is highly requested by the pharmaceutical industry to give evidence-based medical lectures to the medical community throughout the United States.
